Aphrodite

Aphrodite You do not love, in its entirety. You are dedicated to variety. You let your windows up in wintertime, You don’t mind the icy breeze. The wind bursts and hurls, Every frame holding faces Of the ones you claim to love. You wait for your Adonis. You waste time for a dream. The sands of time trickle, Not caring that you are now wrinkled For the ones you claim to love. You have children that grow up. You hardly notice their passing. Their laughs were never loud enough, To stir your heart and make you forget About the one you claim to love. You let your windows up in wintertime. You forget about the breeze. The wind dusts the time off your face, So you may still look beautiful, For the man that will never come

A review by Madison Burke on The Labyrinth (God, Darwin, and the Meaning of Life) by Philip Appleman.

This book's use of detail and metaphors lead to a beautiful discussion on the philosophy of life.  The Labyrinth is compounded of two differing levels of belief in ones self, from blindly accepting and trusting god, to accepting that determination and ability define humans and that there is no god to fall back on. Many people blindly take every punch that god throws at them because they truly believe that a pristine heaven in the sky is awaiting them. Appleman on talking about evolution writes, " If we cannot make that adjustment to external reality, we fall prey to anxiety, a straightjacket that restricts our ability to make reasonable choices. Then the unreal becomes our reality, and we grope our way through that labyrinth, pursued by the terrors of our own imagination....

Caution: Vision Test in Progress

Caution: Vision Test in Progress Blur the world around you. Smudge the edges so that you cannot see circular and round. Give yourself a shot, a slap, or naivety. There is no way to filter through all the bad to see that one last ray of light. So black out, fade out, opt out. Just know that even though now everything is hazy, that it still exists On some days, you decide to put on your glasses and learn about propaganda, media ploys, and what to wear to look good for your bae. But still to this day why should that matter. We should of all been born with 10/20 vision without a want to create adjustable lens. There is always a smart ass in the room trying to evolve our species. Is it so bad to be obsolete but happy? Today, you do not ask yourself if you can truly see. You take the platter and eat the whole turkey. You break wishbones, cheating to get the bigger half. You walk past homeless without giving spare change. You realize that you have created a different form of blinders...
